Accelerating Advances in Cell and Gene Therapy Production

Summary: The field of cell and gene therapy is revolutionizing the way in which rare and previously untreatable genetic diseases are managed. Production processes for advanced therapies such as viral vectors, autologous and allogeneic cell therapies are still in the early years of development, with numerous advanced approaches under evaluation to improve yield, and help assure quality, function, and safety of these life-transforming medicines. During this session, we reviewed progress in several areas of advanced development and their impact on readiness for large scale manufacturing. We, in part, focused on adeno-associated virus (AAV) with discussions on improving transfection efficiency, batch-feeding/perfusion, new transfection reagents, advances in recovery, cell line engineering including stable/packaging lines and clonal selection, single use technologies, and other topics.
